Gold Standard CDM Case Study

Malavalli Biomass-to-Energy Project in India – the world’s first Gold Standard CERs. South Pole has successfully achieved validation and verification of this highly sustainable CDM project in Southern India. This was also the first emission reduction project worldwide that was awarded Gold Standard CERs.South Pole Biomass Power The purpose of the project is to utilise the available low-density crop residues (cane trash/coconut fronds) and other biomass fuels in the region effectively for the generation of sustainable, emission free power. The generated power from the 4.5 MW biomass power plant is sold to the state grid for sustainable economic growth, conservation of the environment through use of biomass fuels and green house gas (GHG) emission reductions. The project will also help to reduce the ever-increasing demand and supply gap of electricity in India. In addition to all of these factors the project also produces organic fertilisers (with ash from the Biomass Power Plant as an input) and distributes it to the farmers from whose fields the crop residues are collected.

BBC broadcasted a reportage on South Pole's Malawalli project.
