Forestry Case Study

One of the first native species reforestation projects in Colombia. This native species reforestation project envisions the reforestation of 11'000 ha (with a potential to be extended over the coming years) of degraded land in the area of Cáceres/Antioquia and Cravo Norte/Arauca. The project area has been previously exposed to grazing activities and the Caceres area has also been exposed to unsuitable alluvial gold mining practices. The project is foreseen to sequester 2’200’000 tons of CO2.South Pole Forestry The benefits of the project include the promotion of the use of native tropical species such as Abarco (Cariniana piriformis), Choiba (Dipteris Oleifera), and Guino (Carapa guianensis), contrary to the common practice of reforestation with Teak, Pines, Melina and Eucalyptus. The project has an exceptional social impact, focused at capacity development of locals, participatory project planning and operation, and the creation of qualified labor, in areas that in past have been exposed to illegal land use (such as Coca plantations).

Projects of the project owning company Asorpar have been the foundation for the establishment of the first-of-its-kind international masters career “Sustainable tropical forestry” launched by the University of Antioquia in 2010.
